using google analytics to track users (and click-throughs to sales pages) on your myspace page !

ok, so myspace has its own analytics thing. its crap though. really poor.

google analytics is much better. but one problem is that myspace dont let you use javascript (the default way that you get analytics to track visits to your site) – there is a solution though – analytics for flash – and myspace allows you to embed flash objects into your page. we are on to a winner.

here is how to use google analytics in your myspace page

1) sign up for an analytics account if you dont already have one, create a new profile and enter the url as your myspace page – eg myspace.com/hybridmachinima

2) go here and follow the instructions, embed the code into your site, making sure to use your analytics UA number where its meant to go.

3) go back to the tab with analytics, hit edit next to your new profile, then at the top right you will see ‘check status’ click that.

it will now say ‘Waiting for Data’ if you click the ? next to it it will tell you –
The tracking code has been detected on the home page of your website, and Google Analytics is aggregating the data to populate into your reports.

you are now good to go. you can get all the benefits of google analytics for your myspace page, like tracking how many people go to your website, or how many people leave via your itunes link, etc (and you can start running your band more like a business – even if you dont like the sound of it it is what you have to do =)

oh, and i have updated the css for my myspace page, check it out here – myspace.com/hybridmachinima and tell me what you think =)
