1) open safari
2) go to preferences > general
3) make sure ‘google’ is your preferred search engine.
4) make sure the browser you want to use to perform the search is the default web browser.

now, launch spotlight search and type something in, when you click on ‘search the web’ it will open your default browser and will show the google results for that search .

if you perform a search using spotlight you can preview all the files shown, simply hover the mouse over the file and a ‘quicklook’ will appear.
if its an mp3 or any other music file then you can hover over the music notes icon in the quickview and a play button will appear, you can then play the track.

1) press cmd + spacebar

when you press cmd + spacebar at the same time you will see the spotlight search appear in the top right hand corner, you can now type your query without having to use the mouse!

you can also use

cmd + alt + spacebar

to open a finder window to search there

I’ve been using the stanford iOS course to try out the iTunes U app for both my iPad and my iPhone.

a couple of things that I’ve noticed:

1) you can watch the lecture videos on your apple TV
2) you can read supplied lecture notes at the same time as watching the lecture video on your apple TV
3) you can view the lecture notes (pdf’s) in ibooks by clicking the top right ‘view in’ and picking ibooks [or kindle, etc]

if you have an iPad then i recommend you give it a shot!

1) try holding the eject key, it may work
2) try dragging the mounted cd to the trash, it may work
3) open finder and try clicking on the eject button next to the cd or dvd in the sidebar, it may work

if the above havent worked, then
1) open disk utility (applications > utilities > dosk utility)
2) click on the drive in the left sidebar
3) click eject at the top of the disk utility app

if all of that hasnt worked
1) reboot your mac and hold the option [alt] key when it starts
2) when your mac presents you with a list of harddrives, press the eject key

if that doesnt work,
1) reboot your mac and hold the mouse button while it starts

1) open contacts
2) pick the contact you wish to have a custom ringtone
3) click ‘edit’
4) scroll down and you will see ‘ringtone’ and ‘text tone’
5) click ‘ringtone’ and pick the rington you want for that contact
6) click save

done!

1) go to settings > sounds > ringtone
2) pick your ringtone!

done :)

1) go to settings > sounds > text tone
2) pick your new tone!

done!

the file you need to change is called

/System/Library/Frameworks/AppKit.framework/Versions/C/Resources/
NSTexturedFullScreenBackgroundColor.png

simply rename the image and copy the image you want to the folder and call it

NSTexturedFullScreenBackgroundColor.png

i was happy with the built in notes.app for my iphone and i was happy syncing it via gmail to my mail.app on my mac.

i got an iphone 4s, and donated my iphone 3gs to my girlfriend. who uses windows.
i looked for a solution for her to be able to use the notes.app and sync it with something in windows.
it turns out that you cant :(

so i installed evernote on her windows machine. and on her iphone 3gs.
perfect. she can now have a consistent note taking and list making app cross platform, she can use it at work, and on her laptop and on her phone.

but I use linux at work. its ok though, because you can use evernote in a browser. and there is a linux client too [nixnote]

so now i have evernote on my iphone 4s, on my macbook pro, on my linux machine at work and on my ipad. all synced with the same notes. for free.

i cant recommend it enough, so give it a try if the notes.app isnt enough for you.
