more videos…

i just made a little video, its another test of visualisation, but this time I used windows media player to generate the visualisations, I was really testing out a new screen capture thing I found caled tipcam - its ok, not the best - it only records at 15 FPS, which is pretty low.
but it does have some nice features - it records direct to flv, so no messing about…

calendars and organisation.

image

I’m the most disorganised person I know. but I also get the most done. its not a contradiction in terms, well, not really.
I use google calendar a lot now - I used to use a .txt file and notepad. I still use microsoft onenote every day to put stuff in that i want to do, but never seem to get round to it. So i started making different calendars in…

visualisation

everyone’s itunes does it.
you get massive visualisations at gigs.
im experimenting in proper visuals for my gigs - I play ableton in a band.
I have yet to find a visualisation program that takes input from your soundcard and generates the visualisations based on whats coming into that input. I suppose ill have to make my own - or find a way to make winamp ‘listen’ to the mic port - then…

tips for micing up a drum kit

image

there are loads and loads of things to remember when setting up mics on a drum-kit.
phase.
watch out for the phase difference on your overheads. if you hear a swooshing noise when you solo the OH mics, then its phasing, also you’ll notice if it goes quiet when you add the left to the right, then its out of phase, reverse the phase on one of the mics, and it’ll spring…

gigs inside your itunes

image

http://www.iconcertcal.com/

ive been using songkick for a while, infact, i have it integrated into my google calendar.

but this is better. it goes in to your itunes.
install it and then go to view - visualisers - ical

you put in your city, and it brings up new album releases and it brings up the upcoming gigs.
enter your country in the State box (if, like most of the planet, you dont live in the…

mastering tracks

image

ok, so the hard part is done. youve written, demoed, practiced, arranged in countless different ways, recorded, re-recorded, mixed, re-mixed and finally scrapped and done all that again, you have a handfull of songs. your not happy with them (noone ever is).
now the hard part starts.
Mastering.
I use protools for mastering, you can use anything your familiar with.
the first thing to do is to import all your mixed tracks into their own…

Videos

well, I now have a way to make tutorial videos, and this is really the last in a series of tests for me, this is the test of getting my video from youtube and generating a page with the video in it, its not yet working properly on the homepage - i need to put an if statement in the code to check if the file is a video instead of a picture.
it should be working on the front page as well, and the story should be ok in the categories, but the single page video is borked =P

this video is just me running an ableton session so that i could make a video of it and test everything…

new m-audio drivers

image

I have an m-audio delta 1010 sound card. its the rack one. its pretty good, considering the price I paid for it. it has 10 inputs and 10 outputs. It doesnt have preamps, but it does work with protools which is why I got it - that way I can add my own preamps and I can run proools on it without buying a crappy mbox or one of the…

A quick tip about EQ

image

this one is really fast - if you are adding EQ to a track, watch the peaks -
eg, if you have a track thats peak value is -3dB and you add 4dB @ 500hz, then its gonna clip.
this is also true if you take 4dB away from the signal - it still clips, this is because of the way that computers handle maths.
so watch out for that!

another thing to…

Protools tips

image

here are some tips for protools - how to cram more into your session, and a few shortcuts that i use

the first thing is to use a lot of busses.
I usually group all my drum tracks together then fling an aux after it, and route all the outputs of the audio tracks from the drums to the aux chan. that way i can place individual eq on each drum track…
