Itunes U on ipad and iphone

you probably all know about iTunes u on the iPad and iPhone.
I’ve been trying it out, and so far its excellent.

I’ve been using the stanford iOS course to try out the iTunes U app for both my iPad and my iPhone.

a couple of things that I’ve noticed:

1) you can watch the lecture videos on your apple TV
2) you can read supplied lecture notes at the same time as watching the lecture video on your apple TV
3) you can view the lecture notes (pdf’s) in ibooks by clicking the top right ‘view in’ and picking ibooks [or kindle, etc]

if you have an iPad then i recommend you give it a shot!

set custom ringtone for contact iphone

this will show you how to set custom ringtones for contacts on your iphone.

1) open contacts
2) pick the contact you wish to have a custom ringtone
3) click ‘edit’
4) scroll down and you will see ‘ringtone’ and ‘text tone’
5) click ‘ringtone’ and pick the rington you want for that contact
6) click save

done!

this will show you how to change the ringtone on your iphone

1) go to settings > sounds > ringtone
2) pick your ringtone!

evernote

it took me a while, but i finally jumped on board the evernote bandwagon.

i was happy with the built in notes.app for my iphone and i was happy syncing it via gmail to my mail.app on my mac.

i got an iphone 4s, and donated my iphone 3gs to my girlfriend. who uses windows.
i looked for a solution for her to be able to use the notes.app and sync it with something in windows.
it turns out that you cant :(

so i installed evernote on her windows machine. and on her iphone 3gs.
perfect. she can now have a consistent note taking and list making app cross platform, she can use it at work, and on her laptop and on her phone.

but I use linux at work. its ok though, because you can use evernote in a browser. and there is a linux client too [nixnote]

so now i have evernote on my iphone 4s, on my macbook pro, on my linux machine at work and on my ipad. all synced with the same notes. for free.

i cant recommend it enough, so give it a try if the notes.app isnt enough for you.

how to fix the iphone home button

this post will show you how to fix the iphone and ipad home button by recalibrating it.

1) launch the weather app (or the stocks app, or any of the builtin ios apps)
2) hold the power button till the ‘slide to power off’ appears
3) once the ‘slide to power off’ appears press and hold the home button till the ‘slide to power off’ goes away.

your iphones home button will now be re-calibrated :D

find your friends location using siri

this one is pretty cool, you can use siri to tell you the location of your friends.

make sure you are logged in to your ‘find my friends’ app (get it from the app store if you dont already have it)

ask siri

‘where is contactname’

and it will look them up and show you on a map :)

enable airplay mirroring on iphone 4s

this will show you how to enable airplay mirroring on your iphone 4s and your ipad2

double click the home button to show the running tasks
swipe left on the running tasks to show the ipod shortcuts
swipe left again
you will see the airplay icon

if you clic the airplay icon then you can pick the airplay output for the device.
you can also turn mirroring on.

enable airplay on bbc iplayer for ipad or iphone

this will show you how to enable airplay for the iplayer app on your ipad or iphone.
it will let you watch bbc iplayer content on your tv via your apple tv :D

1) open the iplayer app
2) double click the home button (the physical button on your ipad or iphone)
3) it will bring up the running apps, swipe left till you see the airplay icon
4) press the airplay icon and pick your appletv
5) touch your iplayer app again and pick a video.

it will now play on your tv!

access shared itunes library from ipad or iphone

this will show you how to use itunes home sharing to view and play your entire itunes library from your mac or pc on your ipad or iphone

in your mac or pc turn on ‘home sharing’

in your ipad or iphone, go to
settings > music
enter your home sharing credentials

when you now open the music app on your ipad or iphone and goto ‘more’ you will see a ‘sharing’ option
when you select that option you can pick your shared music library and browse / play all the media (videos, music, podcasts, audiobooks, etc) that lives on your pc / mac on your ipad without syncing it!
