ok, so ive been using osx lion and ios5 since they launched.
ios5 is nice, notification center and imessage are fantastic.
airplay mirroring is an excellent idea too.

now, if osx lion had airplay mirroring it would be awesome, i wouldnt have to plug my macbook pro into the telly.

imessage would be cool too.
its not so important if its a separate app, or if its integrated into ichat or facetime.
if it is a new app then notification center is a must.

notification center on lion would be awesome.

Win 98 era; netscape, a 586 and the internet!

By this time I had two computers. I had my own network. I still had the laptop. I had the null modem cable as my friend was disinterested by now, and my mums dad had given me a computer to help me with school. I was probably 15 or 16 by now. We still played games on the network. But I had windows 98. With Internet Explorer. And netscape. and a TCP/IP stack!!
There were a few websites, and BT was now an ISP. So we had the internet. I even had my first website. a subdomain on one of BT’s machines, but it was mine!

I learned to code (really poor) html. In notepad.

google was there, but Altavista was better. you couldn’t buy anything. the internet was commercial free. but you could learn about all sorts of things. you could also get the anarchists cookbook. then Napster came out. what a riot that was. i was a skater by this point, so often had a room full of my friends (10 at a time) and we would shout out random words to try to find bands. thats how i found nuclear rabbit. it took two days to download one track. i managed to get a second monitor. and i had a dual screen setup. with two S3 graphics cards. these were good times.

Networking the laptop to play games with a null modem cable!

now that i knew computers could talk to each other i started to find things everywhere, a few years had passed and doom was out. there was now a computer shop in my town, and i had failed at upgrading the laptop to win95 as the very last floppy out of a set of 100 ish was corrupt. but it didn’t matter. you didn’t need windows to run doom. or heretic. which was (and is) much better imho.
i had had a ram upgrade on the laptop, it now had 16mb ram. my friend had a PC too, and his had sound! and colour! (this was how i found out that dos 6.22 had colour in it!) we put our money together and got a null modem cable (after trying to get our modems to talk to each other and failing) and i brought the laptop round. we setup the connection and spent weeks playing multiplayer doom, heretic and [some car racing game - like a clone of mario kart ???] i also got a boot sector virus. (not from the null-modem connection, but from a shareware game we got to play on our network).

A monochrome laptop, hooking up to a 14.4k modem, going on a bbs, learning AT commands

It was nineteen ninety something before five, probably two or three. I must have been eleven or twelve years old.
My dad had a laptop.

486 25 MHz, monochrome screen, 4Mb ram, 40Mb hard drive. It was a fast machine. It ran MS DOS 5.0 and windows 3.11.
I had been allowed on it from day one. I used to (and still do) have a Sinclair ZX spectrum +2A so knew what a computer was and how to break it. I also knew how to fix the laptop when it broke. I made it run faster by loading dos into a ram-disk, i setup the mouse. I ran games on it. it was awesome. then dos 6.22 came out, so i installed that. it had colour, but i didn’t know that till much later on. it also had ‘help’ from which i learned how to make batch scripts to do all sorts of things: change the autoexec.bat and config.sys files to be better for games, reboot and load the game, etc. they were fun days.

There was also an us robotics 14.4k modem and a manual for it in the bag. I never really used it, i didn’t need to, but one day i got a PC magazine because it had a couple of floppies with games on it and learned about ‘the internet’. it was a very new thing, and you needed a tcp/ip stack and a browser to get on it. you also needed a modem. ahh, i thought, thats what that box is for. the magazine told me that i could download the tcp stack from a BBS and gave me instruction on how to do so. so i fired up minicom, i think, and proceeded to try to try connect to a random phone number. after failing a good few times (probably for a day or two) and reading the manual from cover to cover a few times, i eventually connected, and at the same time learned most of the AT commandset.

it was cool, i could phone anything with this. so i phoned the operator and sent them beeps and clicks :)
anyway. i managed to download the tcp/ip stack from whatever bbs it was, but had no browser, but it was fine, that was going to be in the next months magazine. i think it was netscape, but it could well have been mosaic. it didn’t matter anyway because there were no ISP’s anywhere near where we lived, so that idea was shot in the foot. but i had learned a couple of things: computers could talk to each other and i knew how to do it with these AT commands.
