- itunes is good for free music
- itsfreedownloads.com have a list of the latest free tracks on iTunes
- Amazon mp3 store has a lot of free stuff too
- last.fm have a download section them
- Spotify offer a free, ad supported streaming service – while its not technically a download, you can get to listen to your favourite tracks for free
- artistserver.com have 11000 free mp3 files for you to download
- Tripple J have a free downloads section :)
- mp3.com have lots of free music for you to download!
- sigur ros have a section where you can download some of their tracks

I’m always on the search for new music, and while myspace is great (i found jose gonzalez through myspace years ago) myspace.com/josegonzalez he does a version of teardrop by massive attack (website) (teardrop video on youtube) which is in the same kind of vain as newton faulkners version (here) ) its been taken over by the man, which it kind of always has been, using the lure of unlimited free listening to new up and coming bands to sell the records of the majors only occasionally do you actually get a band that have staying power through this. Saying that, my friends band serotone (here) mannaged to get a record deal through myspace, one of the scouts for their label happened to go to the page, and contacted them and offered a deal.
not bad.
but its all disposable.
its not like the rolling stones (who have launched their own youtube channel here)
so, on my search for music (free or not) ive found a load of bands, some old, some new, some failed and some not. a good idea is to go to wikipedia’s lists of musicians by genre page
only thing is that it tends to be signed bands, though you do get a lot of bands that you will have never heard of in genres you like here is a list from my bookmarks of some to check out…
