How to sync imessages between iphone ipad and mac osx

Once you have setup your mac and iOS device to use the same method to send and receive iMessages then anyone who sends you an iMessage (ether to your phone number or email address) will have that message delivered to both your iOS device and your mac! it will let you start a conversation on your iPhone, then go to your mac and continue it, etc :D

There are two methods, one for ios5 and osx lion and above, and the other for ios6 and osx lion and above

1) Method 1 – receive all messages at email address

This method will force your iPhone to send and receive iMessages identified by your iCloud email address, and it will force your mac to send and receive iMessages identified by your iCloud email address.

Prereqs: ios5 + iMessages, osx lion + iMessages or greater

In iOS device (iphone / ipad / ipod touch)

  • settings > Messages >
  • turn iMessages on
  • click ‘receive at’
  • add your iCloud email address if its not already there
  • goto ‘caller id’
  • select your email address

In osx

  • iMessages > Preferences > Accounts > iMessages
  • Make sure both your iCloud email address and phone number are ticked under ‘i can be reached at’
  • [it is a good idea to add all of your other email addresses here, just incase]

2) Method 2 – receive all messages at phone number

This method will force your iPhone to send and receive iMessages identified by your phone number, and it will force your mac to send and receive iMessages identified by your phone number too

Prereqs: ios6, osx lion + iMessages or greater

In iOS devices (iphone / ipad / ipod touch)

  • Settings > iMessages >
  • Turn iMessage on

In osx
