Knops california common

Knops Beer Company is an Edinburgh-based craft brewery founded in 2011 by Robert Knops, who left a career in law to do something considerably more enjoyable. California Common is one of their most interesting beers — an unusual hybrid style that uses lager yeast fermented at ale temperatures, creating something that sits between the two great beer traditions. The style originated in 19th-century San Francisco, where the warm climate made conventional lager fermentation impossible.

Tasting Notes

Knops California Common pours a clear, medium amber colour with a light tan head. The nose is distinctive: toasty caramel malt, a hint of woodiness, and a clean lager-like crispness that coexists interestingly with the ale character. On the palate it’s medium-bodied and smooth: caramel and toffee malt are prominent, with earthy and woody hop notes providing balance. The lager yeast gives it a clean, dry finish that’s unusual for an amber ale.

Verdict

Serve at cellar temperature in a pint glass. California Common is a genuinely interesting beer that rewards attention — it doesn’t fit neatly into any category, which is exactly the point. If you’re a craft beer explorer who likes styles that don’t follow the usual rules, this is worth seeking out. Pairs well with grilled meats and American-style food. Knops do the style with real confidence.
