Jim Beam Pre-Prohibition Rye is a bottle that tips its hat to American whiskey history — specifically to the era before 1920, when rye whiskey dominated the American market. Before Prohibition wiped out most of the country’s distilleries, rye was king. Jim Beam’s Pre-Prohibition Rye is an attempt to revive that tradition with a mash bill that echoes those pre-Prohibition recipes.
Made with at least 51% rye grain (as required by law), this expression has the bold, spicy character that defines American rye whiskey. At 45% ABV, it’s bottled with a little more presence than many entry-level bourbons. The nose offers cracked black pepper, dried herbs, toasted oak, and a hint of citrus rind. On the palate the rye spice takes centre stage — peppery and assertive — balanced by a honeyed sweetness and a long, warming finish with notes of vanilla and caramel from the oak.
Rye whiskey has made a massive comeback in recent years, and Pre-Prohibition Rye is a brilliant and affordable entry point into the category. It’s particularly excellent in cocktails — the spice cuts through a Manhattan beautifully, and it makes an exceptional Old Fashioned. A spirit that deserves a place in every well-stocked home bar.
