Bruichladdich the Laddie Eight

Bruichladdich The Laddie Eight is a boldly modern expression from one of Islay’s most progressive and independently-minded distilleries. Bruichladdich — pronounced “brook-laddie” — has always done things differently since its revival in 2001, and The Laddie Eight is no exception. Aged for eight years in a combination of American and French oak casks, it is bottled unpeated, which is characteristic of Bruichladdich’s classic Laddie style (their peated expressions are released separately as Port Charlotte and Octomore).

At 50% ABV, this is a whisky with real presence. The nose is fresh and vibrant — green apple, citrus zest, white peach, and a creamy vanilla note from the American oak. On the palate it’s surprisingly complex for an eight-year-old: lemon curd, pear, subtle floral notes, and a gentle maritime salinity that speaks to its coastal Islay origins without dominating. The French oak adds a touch of spice and structure. The finish is clean and medium-long, with lingering citrus and a satisfying warmth.

Bruichladdich The Laddie Eight is a fantastic example of what a well-crafted younger Scotch can achieve when distillery character and cask selection are taken seriously. It’s proof that age isn’t everything. Best enjoyed neat or with a splash of water to open up the fruit. If you want to explore Islay without the peat smoke, this is an excellent place to start — and a whisky that will surprise you with its sophistication.
