Atom – Quantum State

Atom Beers are a Hull-based craft brewery with a genuine passion for physics — their entire range is named after scientific concepts, from Schrödinger’s Cat to Quantum State, which is a commitment to the bit that you have to respect. Quantum State is one of their core pale ales, and the name suggests a beer that exists in multiple states simultaneously — which, in the best craft beer tradition, probably means it’s trying to be both sessionable and flavoursome at the same time.

Tasting Notes

Quantum State pours a clear golden colour with a white head. The nose is clean and gently hoppy — some citrus and light tropical fruit notes, fresh and inviting. On the palate it’s smooth and well-balanced: a clean malt base, moderate hop character with citrus and light tropical notes, and a clean, dry finish. It’s a beer that achieves the difficult balance of being genuinely sessionable while still having enough flavour to be interesting.

Verdict

Serve cold and enjoy it for what it is: a well-made, balanced session pale ale from a brewery with a genuinely distinctive identity. Atom Beers are doing interesting things in Hull, and Quantum State is a solid representative of their approach. The physics theme is fun rather than pretentious, which is exactly the right tone. Great stuff from one of Yorkshire’s most creative craft breweries.
