Colonsay Lager comes from one of Scotland’s most remote and characterful island breweries. The Isle of Colonsay sits in the Inner Hebrides, a small gem of an island with a permanent population of around 130 people โ and its own brewery, which says everything you need to know about priorities. The lager is brewed using traditional methods, and the setting alone gives it a certain romance before you’ve even opened the bottle.
Tasting Notes
On the nose it’s clean and fresh โ faint grain, a hint of floral hops, nothing demanding. It pours a pale golden colour with reasonable carbonation and a short-lived white head. The palate is light and crisp, with a gentle biscuity malt backbone and a mild hop bitterness that keeps things interesting without ever getting assertive. The finish is clean and dry, exactly what you want from a good session lager.
Verdict
Serve it well chilled in a pint glass or a tall Pilsner glass โ this isn’t the kind of beer that needs much ceremony. It’s a genuinely refreshing lager that happens to come from a place most people will never visit, and there’s something pleasing about that. If you enjoy a clean, well-made lager without the mass-market blandness, Colonsay Lager is well worth seeking out. Perfect for a long summer afternoon, ideally on a hillside with a view.
