Edinburgh Beer Factory is a relatively recent addition to the Scottish craft brewing scene, but they’ve made a strong impression with a range of well-made, accessible beers. Paulozzi is their take on a premium lager โ the name apparently a nod to the Italian lager-brewing tradition that influenced the style. In Edinburgh, a city with a strong brewing heritage going back centuries, launching a quality craft lager feels both fitting and quietly bold.
Tasting Notes
Paulozzi pours a clear, pale straw-gold colour with a white head and good carbonation. The nose is clean and lager-fresh โ light grain, a subtle floral hop character, and the kind of crispness that suggests this is going to be very easy to drink. On the palate it’s crisp and clean: gentle malt sweetness, moderate hop bitterness, and a dry, refreshing finish. It’s well-made without being particularly complex โ exactly what a good craft lager should be.
Verdict
Serve ice cold in a proper tall glass. Paulozzi is a craft lager that would convert the most committed lager-sceptic, and an ale drinker’s lager โ clean enough to refresh, interesting enough to hold your attention. Pair it with anything, honestly: it’s that versatile. A fine representative of what Edinburgh’s newer breweries are capable of producing.
