Konig ludwig dunkel

König Ludwig Dunkel is named after Ludwig II of Bavaria — the famously eccentric “Mad King” who built Neuschwanstein Castle and had unusually strong opinions about architecture and opera. The beer is produced under the royal Wittelsbach family’s brewing tradition and represents the classic Bavarian dunkel style: a dark lager that’s been brewed in Bavaria for centuries and remains one of the region’s most characterful exports.

Tasting Notes

It pours a clear, deep mahogany-brown with reddish highlights and a small tan head. The nose is classic dunkel: rich dark malt, toffee, a hint of bread, and some faint chocolate notes — no hop presence to speak of, which is as it should be. On the palate it’s smooth and medium-bodied with sweet caramel and dark bread flavours, minimal bitterness, and a clean, dry finish. The lager character keeps it crisp despite the dark malt profile.

Verdict

Serve in a traditional Bavarian mug or a half-litre stein if you have one, otherwise any pint glass will do. König Ludwig Dunkel is a masterclass in the dunkel style — genuinely complex malt character delivered in a smooth, approachable format. It’s the beer to recommend to someone who thinks they don’t like dark beer, because the lager crispness makes it far more accessible than many ales. Pairs beautifully with pretzels, roast pork, or Bavarian-style sausage.
