Penderyn Single Malt Welsh Whisky is a genuinely exciting spirit — not just because Welsh whisky is a rare thing, but because Penderyn produces whisky of genuine quality that stands up to the very best from Scotland and Ireland. The Penderyn distillery, nestled in the Brecon Beacons National Park, is responsible for putting Welsh whisky back on the map after a gap of over a century.
What makes Penderyn distinctive is its unique single copper pot still, designed by Dr David Faraday, which produces a much lighter, purer new-make spirit than traditional Scottish pot stills. The whisky is then matured in ex-bourbon barrels and finished in various cask types — including Madeira, sherry, and peated variants. The standard Madeira-finished expression is the most widely available and delivers a wonderfully fruity, floral character.
On the nose it’s delicate and fragrant — fresh fruit, vanilla, and a gentle floral sweetness. The palate brings peach, apricot, cream, and light oak, with a smooth, clean finish. At typically 46% ABV, it has enough presence to be enjoyed neat but remains accessible and elegant. A bottle of Penderyn is a brilliant conversation starter and a genuine testament to Welsh distilling craft.
