The Golden Champion – Golden Ale

Badger Brewery’s Golden Champion is one of their most distinctive and seasonally evocative beers — a golden ale brewed with elderflower that gives it a uniquely English summery character. Hall and Woodhouse have been brewing in Dorset since 1777, and the Golden Champion is a modern expression of that heritage: using a traditional English country ingredient to create something that tastes unmistakably of English summer, warm evenings, and country pubs with gardens.

Tasting Notes

Golden Champion pours a bright, clear golden colour with a modest white head. The nose is where the elderflower really announces itself — delicate floral aromas, light and fresh, sitting on top of the base golden ale character. On the palate it’s light and elegant: gentle malt sweetness, floral elderflower notes, a subtle hop bitterness, and a clean, refreshing finish. The elderflower never overwhelms — it’s a seasoning rather than a dominating flavour, which shows real restraint.

Verdict

Serve cold in a pint glass and drink it outdoors if at all possible — this is a beer that tastes better with fresh air. Golden Champion is a beautifully made, distinctively English summer ale that would convert even committed lager drinkers. Pairs perfectly with garden parties, picnics, and anything involving sunshine. A worthy champion.
