Williams Bros Joker IPA is a flagship beer from one of Scotland’s most respected and creative craft breweries, and it’s the IPA that most clearly shows Williams Bros’ hop credentials. Joker has been part of their core range for years and has built a loyal following both in Scotland and further afield. Getting it on draught is a particular treat — IPAs generally improve considerably on cask or keg compared to bottle, and Joker is no exception.
Tasting Notes
On draught, Joker IPA pours a clear bright golden colour with a white head and an immediately appealing nose — floral, citrus, and pine hop character that’s vivid and fresh. On the palate it delivers on that promise: clean malt base, assertive citrus and floral hop character through the mid-palate, and a long, dry, pleasantly bitter finish. It’s a classic West Coast-influenced IPA without being a pastiche of the style — distinctively Scottish in its cleanliness and balance.
Verdict
Drink it draught and drink it fresh — the hop aromatics are the point, and they fade with time. Joker IPA is one of the finest Scottish IPAs going, full stop. It’s the kind of beer that makes you want to seek it out wherever you are in Scotland. Pairs with spicy food, strong cheese, or just an afternoon in a good pub. Williams Bros at their most hop-forward best.
