Jura 10 Year Old is a classic expression from the Isle of Jura Distillery that offers a wonderful window into the distillery’s traditional style before the rebranding into the current Journey/Seven Wood/Superstition lineup. Aged for a full decade in American white oak ex-bourbon casks, the 10 Year Old has the time and maturation to develop a real depth and complexity that the younger Journey expression hints at but doesn’t fully deliver. It’s a whisky that rewards patience โ both the distillery’s and the drinker’s.
At 40% ABV, the nose is warm and inviting: vanilla, honey, orchard fruit, and a subtle coastal saltiness that speaks to Jura’s remote island setting. On the palate there’s more body and richness than the entry-level expressions โ toffee apple, cinnamon spice, light dried fruit, and a gentle warmth that builds slowly and pleasantly. There’s a whisper of light peat smoke in the background โ Jura’s peat is subtle compared to its Islay neighbours โ which adds just enough complexity to keep things interesting. The finish is satisfyingly long with lingering sweetness and mild spice.
Om nom nom indeed. Jura 10 Year Old is an excellent Christmas dram and a genuinely pleasurable everyday Scotch. It’s the kind of whisky that makes you understand why the island of Jura โ wild, remote, and beautiful โ produces whisky with such a distinctive character. Serve neat or with a small addition of still water. Highly recommended.
