Happy Chappy is one of Cromarty Brewing Co’s core range pale ales โ and the name tells you something about the beer before you’ve even opened it. This isn’t a beer that’s trying to be difficult or challenging; it’s a beer that wants to make you feel good, which is a perfectly valid ambition. Cromarty are based on the Black Isle in the Scottish Highlands and have built a strong reputation for consistent, well-crafted ales.
Tasting Notes
Happy Chappy pours a bright, clear pale golden colour with a white head. The nose is immediately cheerful โ citrus, a bit of tropical fruit, and a clean fresh hop aroma that’s very inviting. On the palate it’s light and crisp with a grapefruity hop character upfront, a gentle malt sweetness in the background, and a clean bitter finish that’s not too challenging. At around 4.1% ABV it’s firmly in session territory.
Verdict
Serve cold and enjoy it for what it is โ a well-made, refreshing session pale ale that doesn’t ask too much of you. Happy Chappy is the kind of beer you reach for when you want something flavoursome but unchallenging: a post-work pint, a barbecue beer, or the one you crack open because the sun’s finally out. Cromarty do this style very well, and Happy Chappy is a reliable favourite.
