Drygate Brewery is one of Glasgow’s most ambitious craft brewing ventures — an open brewery and bar complex in the east end of the city that allows visitors to see the brewing process up close while enjoying the finished product. Founded in 2014 in partnership with Tennent’s, Drygate has carved out a genuinely independent identity and built a strong reputation for quality and creativity. Bearface is their flagship lager and a genuine showcase of what the brewery can do.
Tasting Notes
Bearface is triple-decocted — a traditional Bavarian brewing method that involves boiling portions of the mash repeatedly to develop deeper malt character. The result is a lager with noticeably more body and complexity than the mass-market alternatives: a biscuity, slightly toasty malt backbone that gives it real depth. It pours a clear pale gold with a white head, and the nose is clean and fresh with gentle floral hop notes. On the palate it’s crisp and well-balanced, with that subtle malt richness making itself known. The finish is clean and dry.
Verdict
Serve cold in a tall glass — ideally on draught at the brewery bar itself if you can get there, because Drygate’s tap room is a genuinely excellent space. Bearface is the lager to reach for when you want something refreshing but crafted with real attention to detail. It’s converted more than a few ale-only drinkers, and that’s the best endorsement a lager can get.
