Guzzler

Guzzler is a Yorkshire session ale from Greene King’s stable — and yes, it’s technically a large brewing conglomerate making a beer with a populist name, but Guzzler does exactly what it sets out to do with commendable consistency. Session ales are a genuinely difficult style to get right: too much compromise on flavour and they become watery and forgettable; too assertive and you lose the sessionability that’s the whole point. Guzzler threads that needle fairly well.

Tasting Notes

Guzzler pours a clear light golden colour with a white head that dissipates fairly quickly. The nose is clean and gently citrusy — some hop aroma, fresh grain, nothing demanding. On the palate it’s light-bodied with a crisp, clean character: soft malt sweetness, a gentle hop bitterness, and a dry finish that invites the next sip. At around 3.6% ABV it’s firmly at the sessionable end of things, which is exactly where it should be.

Verdict

Serve cold in a pint glass and drink it for what it is: a reliable, easy-going session ale that does its job without fuss. Guzzler is the kind of beer that doesn’t demand anything from you — it’s just consistently pleasant company. Best on draught at a pub that keeps its lines clean, though it works well enough from a bottle or can. A solid everyday ale.
