birthday treat though :D
Hudson Whiskey is a brand from Tuthilltown Spirits in Gardiner, New York — one of the pioneering craft distilleries that helped kick-start the American artisan spirits movement in the mid-2000s. Hudson Rye is made from 100% New York rye grain, distilled in small copper pot stills, and aged in small-format new American oak barrels. The use of smaller barrels dramatically accelerates maturation and imparts more oak character in a shorter time, giving Hudson Rye a bold, assertive profile despite its relatively young age.
At 46% ABV, Hudson Rye delivers a nose of fresh-cut wood, dried herbs, cracked pepper, and a sweet vanilla undercurrent. On the palate it’s lively and characterful: rye spice up front, followed by caramel, toasted oak, dried fruit, and a pleasant earthiness that reflects the New York terroir of the grain. The small barrel ageing gives it more tannin and wood influence than many comparable ryes, which adds structure and complexity. The finish is long and warming with lingering pepper and sweet spice.
Hudson Rye is a genuinely exciting bottle for anyone interested in American craft whiskey — it has real personality and a sense of place that larger distillery products can sometimes lack. Yes, it’s not cheap — craft distilling is an expensive business — but it’s a birthday treat well worth it. It works brilliantly neat, in a Manhattan, or as the star of a Rye Old Fashioned. A brilliant example of what small-batch American distilling can achieve.
