Hatozaki Pure Malt Japanese Whisky

Hatozaki Pure Malt is a Japanese blended malt whisky from Kaikyo Distillery, located in Akashi on the coast of the Seto Inland Sea in Hyogo Prefecture. The name “Hatozaki” refers to a historic lighthouse that has guided ships through the strait since 1657 — a fitting symbol for a distillery that’s helping to navigate the growing international interest in Japanese whisky. Hatozaki is produced using a traditional Japanese approach: meticulous blending of malt whiskies matured in a combination of American white oak, sherry, and Japanese Mizunara oak casks.

The Mizunara cask influence is the star here — Japanese oak is rare, expensive, and imparts flavours that are completely unique: sandalwood, incense, and a distinctive oriental spice that you simply won’t find in Scotch or American whiskey. At 46% ABV, the nose opens with delicate fruit, vanilla, coconut, and that subtle incense note. On the palate it’s smooth and layered — honey, dried apricot, gentle spice, and a beautiful fragrant quality that’s unmistakably Japanese. The finish is clean and medium-length with lingering sweetness and a whisper of sandalwood.

Hatozaki Pure Malt offers a genuine taste of Japanese whisky craftsmanship at a price point that’s accessible compared to the headline expressions from Suntory or Nikka. It’s best enjoyed neat or with a single cube of ice to open up those delicate aromatics. A fascinating and rewarding bottle for anyone curious about the Japanese whisky category.
