Makers Mark – Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whisky

Maker’s Mark is one of the most iconic and instantly recognisable names in American whiskey, famous not just for what’s in the bottle but for the hand-dipped red wax seal that makes every bottle look like a piece of craft. Produced at Loretto, Kentucky at the Star Hill Farm distillery, Maker’s Mark is a Kentucky straight bourbon that has been made to the same recipe since Bill Samuels Sr. created it in the 1950s. It uses soft red winter wheat instead of the more common rye as the flavouring grain, which gives it a distinctly gentler, smoother character.

At 45% ABV, Maker’s Mark offers a nose of caramel, vanilla, fresh mint, and a warm, biscuity sweetness. On the palate it’s smooth and rounded — the wheated mash bill delivers a softer, creamier texture than rye-heavy bourbons — with flavours of toffee, vanilla, light fruit, and a gentle warmth. The finish is medium-length and clean, sweet rather than spicy, with lingering caramel and a whisper of oak. It’s a bourbon that’s widely loved precisely because it lacks sharp edges.

Maker’s Mark is exceptionally versatile. It works beautifully neat, on the rocks, and in cocktails — particularly a Mint Julep, which was practically designed for it, or a classic bourbon and ginger. It’s a bottle that works for seasoned bourbon fans and newcomers alike, and the distinctive wax-dipped bottle makes it one of the most giftable spirits on any shelf. A true American classic that absolutely delivers on its reputation.
