Swift One is a session ale from Stewart Brewing, the Edinburgh-based craft brewery that’s been producing excellent Scottish ales since 2004. The name does a lot of work — it signals a beer that’s designed for exactly the kind of quick, uncomplicated, enjoyable drinking that the best session ales deliver. Stewart Brewing have a knack for producing beers that are quietly excellent without demanding attention, and Swift One is a good example of that approach.
Tasting Notes
Swift One pours a golden amber colour with a modest head. The nose is clean and gently malty with a light hop note — biscuit, a hint of citrus, nothing demanding. On the palate it’s smooth and easy-drinking: malt sweetness upfront, a gentle hop bitterness, and a clean, refreshing finish. The body is light to medium, which makes it genuinely sessionable. At around 4% ABV it’s exactly where a session ale should be.
Verdict
Swift One is the kind of reliable Scottish session ale you can happily drink several pints of without feeling like you’ve been through an ordeal. Best on cask in a good pub, but works well from a can or bottle too. It’s an excellent choice for long afternoons, casual evenings, or any situation where you want something consistently pleasant without overthinking it. Stewart Brewing at their most approachably good.
