The Umidigi One Max arrived as part of a switch from iPhone to Android โ a deliberate decision to explore the other side of the mobile ecosystem with a budget Chinese handset. The One Max offered specifications that would have been flagship-level a couple of years earlier: a large 6.3″ display, a dual-camera setup, a 4150mAh battery, and a fingerprint sensor, all at a price point well below mainstream Android alternatives. As an introduction to budget Android hardware, it was a revealing experience.
First Impressions
The build quality was better than the price suggested โ the glass back and aluminium-look frame felt premium in the hand, and the large display was bright and sharp enough for everyday use. The dual rear cameras produced reasonable results in good light, with the portrait mode (using the secondary camera for depth sensing) working credibly. The Helio P23 chipset handled everyday tasks without complaint, though demanding apps and games exposed its mid-range positioning. The battery life from the large 4150mAh cell was genuinely excellent.
Verdict
The Umidigi One Max demonstrated that budget Chinese Android phones had reached a point of genuine competence โ not perfect in any dimension, but capable enough across all of them to serve as a daily driver. The switch from iPhone to this device highlighted both what Android offered (customisation, side-loading, file system access) and what it lacked at the budget end (software longevity, camera consistency). A worthwhile experiment and an honest reflection of the mid-range Android market in early 2019.
