Bah Humbug is Wychwood’s winter seasonal ale, and it’s one of the better festive releases from a British brewery. Released each autumn to coincide with the darker evenings and Christmas build-up, it leans into the warmth and richness you want from a seasonal beer. The name is a nod to Scrooge’s famous grumble, which feels apt — this is the kind of beer that might convert even the most committed Christmas cynic.
Tasting Notes
Bah Humbug pours a deep amber-brown with a tan head and an immediate aroma of warming Christmas spices — cinnamon, nutmeg, and something faintly clove-like. The palate backs this up with rich malt sweetness, dried fruit character, and that gentle spice lingering through the mid-palate. It’s 6% ABV, which gives it a warming quality without being overwhelming. The finish is smooth and slightly sweet, with the spice fading slowly.
Verdict
Serve Bah Humbug just below room temperature to let the spice character come through properly — too cold and you lose the nuance. It’s a great beer to have on Christmas Eve or Boxing Day when you want something with seasonal character but still want to actually taste your beer. Pairs well with mince pies, strong cheese, or dark chocolate. One of the better winter ales out there.
