Public DNS services

I joined a few older posts together (and redirected those old posts here) to create a single place for my public dns services list and instructions.

Short list of IP addresses if you know what your doing

google: 8.8.8.8 8.8.4.4
opendns: 208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220
quad9 (IBM): 9.9.9.9
cloudflare: 1.1.1.1, 1.0.0.1

You may want to check my privacy settings post to tighten up your browsers too.

OpenDNS on mac

To add opendns to your mac you need to add the opendns ip addresses: 208.67.220.220 and 208.67.222.222

  • open system preferences > network
  • select your network card on the left hand side
  • click ‘advanced’ in the bottom right
  • click the ‘dns’ tab
  • click the ‘+’ at the lower left
  • add in 208.67.222.222 and add in 208.67.220.220
  • click ok

Use OpenDNS on iphone or an ipad

how to use opendns on an iphone or ipad.

  • goto settings > wifi
  • click the blue circle with the > in it next to your wifi network
  • you will see the details for your connection.

its not obvious, but the text is editable :)

In DNS delete whats there and enter

  • 208.67.222.222
  • or
  • 208.67.220.220

you can string them together with a comma to list more than one, eg

208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220

you are now set to use opendns on your iphone or ipad!

    Do you think it’s good idea to use quad9 as primary and google as secondary (9.9.9.9 + 8.8.8.8) ?

      I’ve used google and opendns as primary / secondary for a while now – quad9 then google should be fine :)
