During my trip to York, I found a fantastic beer shop/pub – The House of the Trembling Madness
We went in for a couple of beers upstairs, and had a look round their fantastic selection of craft beers (look out for a post about these soon)
In the basement they have a cracking selection of spirits, including the Ardbeg that I had been looking for, so I had to get it.
Ardbeg Uigeadail (pronounced “oo-ga-dal”) is widely regarded as one of the finest whiskies Ardbeg has ever produced โ and given that Ardbeg sits among the very best Islay distilleries, that’s saying something. Named after the remote Loch Uigeadail that supplies the distillery’s water, this is a non-age-statement expression that blends heavily peated Ardbeg spirit with whisky matured in ex-Oloroso sherry casks. The result is a marriage of Islay fire and sherried richness that few other whiskies can match.
Bottled at cask strength (typically around 54% ABV), Uigeadail hits immediately on the nose with waves of dark peat smoke, followed closely by Christmas cake, dried fruit, espresso, and a hint of dark chocolate. It’s big and complex but never aggressive. On the palate it delivers everything the nose promises โ smoky tar and iodine give way to rich raisins, cinnamon, mocha, and a warming sweetness from the sherry casks. The finish is extraordinarily long: smoke, dried fruit, and a gentle medicinal warmth that lingers for minutes.
Adding a few drops of water at cask strength opens it up beautifully and reveals even more dried fruit and spice underneath the smoke. Uigeadail regularly tops whisky polls and has won numerous awards โ and deservedly so. If you enjoy peated Scotch and haven’t tried this yet, it should be at the very top of your list. An absolute masterpiece of Islay whisky-making
